THIRD MARKET DAY ROCKS KRAAIFONTEIN COMMUNITY
The Kraaifontein community was up and about early Saturday morning as young and old made their way to the third Rachel’s Angels Market day. The day started off with a 5km funwalk which was opened by members of the local Santos Football Club. The funwalk, themed Superheroes for our planet, was in support of the Earth Hour initiative and challenged all participants to come dressed as a superhero. Some of the interesting outfits included a suit made of newspaper and dresses from recycled plastic. The crowd of more than 5000 people were kept on their feet by performers such as Byron Clarke, Axene, La Vuvuzela and Blackkurrant.
MARKET DAY PREPARATION WORKSHOP
With less than a month left before the Market Day, learners and mentors gathered at Bernadino Heights High School in Kraaifontein in preparation of the big day.
Dr Michael le Cordeur, deputy chairperson of the Rachel’s Angels Trust welcomed everyone and introduced Ivor Price of Media24 who would be the media liaison for the Market Day.
During his speech Ivor touched on the subject of what to avoid when dealing with the media, what a good press release consists of and how to get your message across. At the end of his speech he gave all participating schools 15 minutes to write a press release about the upcoming Market Day and all the activities that would be taking place.

Axene RACHEL'S ANGELS 2011 ANNUAL LETURE WITH PROF. JONATHAN JANSEN
To signal the start of a new academic year, the Media24 Rachel’s Angels Trust hosted their Inaugural Annual Lecture at New Orleans Secondary School in Paarl on the 2nd of February 2011. The evening served a multifaceted purpose - to inspire and motivate both learners and mentors participating in the programme, to address the various expectations and create an atmosphere of excitement ahead of the year’s activities.
The keynote address was delivered by Professor Jonathan Jansen, rector of the University of the Free State and author of Knowledge in the Blood. The theme of his address – Why you shouldn’t believe the Senior Certificate results and what to do about it - provoked interesting discussions and opinions during a 30 minute Q&A session.
ANGELS CELEBRATE END OF YEAR WITH THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE Saturday the 23rd of October 2010 signalled the end of the first year of the 2010/11 Rachel’s Angels mentee-mentor group's two year mentorship programme. The angels participated in a day filled with both mentally and physically challenging activities, which was held at Lϋckhoff Secondary School situated in Idas Valley, Stellenbosch.
The survivor challenge has become an institution with the mentorship programme, signalling the end of a year’s activities. Within the mentorship programme team building plays an integral part in fostering awareness of team spirit as well as reinforcing commitment to the shared goals and objectives of the programme.
RACHEL'S ANGELS MENTORS PREPARING FOR THEIR JOURNEY While the rest of Stellenbosch was sleeping in, the Rachel’s Angels mentors woke at the crack of dawn to attend their induction and training workshop. The induction and workshop took place on Saturday 21 August at the Sanlam Hall located in the Neelsie Student Centre at Stellenbosch University.
After a quick break the training workshop took place which was presented by The Leonard Leadership group covering subjects such as; effective study techniques, following a healthy lifestyle and teachings on what makes a good mentor.
RACHEL'S ANGELS SUPPORTING 2010 On Saturday 12th of June, the newly inducted 2010 Rachel’s Angels mentee group attended their very first team building event at Stellenbosch University. More than a hundred Grade 11 learners from various high schools in the Western Cape piled into the Sanlam Hall at Stellenbosch University to participate in what quickly became a fun filled day that would showcase their dancing and acting skills.
During their first activity, a movie making session, the learners got the opportunity to give their imaginations free reign. Each group received a movie title which they had to act out and film, complete with a news flash and commercial break.
After all the excitement of making their own movie, the learners were urged to capture the gees of the 2010 Soccer World Cup by learning the well known diski dance and showcasing it to their audience.
The day’s activities were aimed at building camaraderie amongst the learners of the various schools, whilst developing the learners individually and as a team.
RACHEL'S ANGELS WELCOMES THE CLASS OF 2010/11 On Saturday 24 April, more than 100 learners from schools scattered around the Western Cape arrived at the Stellenbosch University to be introduced to an educational journey that is sure to shape their future.
These learners, based on their previous achievements and their potential for excellence, were the selected few who would be participating in the next Rachel’s Angels mentorship programme cycle.
Learners were introduced to the trustees, including Prof. Rachel Jafta, chairperson and founder of Rachel’s Angels, who shared their heart and vision for the programme coupled with good dose of encouragement.
The programme aims to develop learners, giving them an opportunity to reach their full potential. This is done through mentorship, by ways of one-on-one monitoring; workshops, socials, campus visits and various events over the course of the next two years.
RACHEL’S ANGELS REWARDS THEIR BRIGHTEST STARS
On Friday 15 January the Grand West Market Hall came alive in true James Bond style as the Rachel’s Angels Trust hosted a gala ceremony to award all participating schools, mentors and mentees of the programme for their hard work over the 2008/9 period.
During Friday’s function the Best School, Best Mentor and Best Mentee was rewarded for their commitment to the Rachel’s Angels project and the extent to which they had harnessed the ideals of the programme as their own.
RACHEL’S ANGELS DYNAMIC OLD OAK CHALLENGE
The Rachel’s Angels mentors and mentees said their final goodbyes by competing against each other in the Rachel’s Angels Dynamic Old Oak Challenge. The challenge, held at the Stellenbosch High School, was a fun filled adventure in the form of The Amazing Race. It was a test of both mental and physical abilities.

MEDIA24 EMPOWERMENTS TRUSTS REWARDS ARCHBISHOP TUTU The two Media24 Empowerment Trusts, Media24 Rachel's Angels Trust and MultiChoice Fort Hare Inkwenkwezi Trust awarded Archbishop Desmond Tutu with a certificate of gratitude for his outstanding work as a mentor for the people of South Africa.
