As part of the annual “Cell C Take A Girl To Work Day” initiative, 25 girl learners from Kylemore and Stellenzicht High in Cape Town and Soms Luminis in Johannesburg spent the day at the Media24 offices.
The learners were addressed by senior management, editors, marketing managers and human resources, who provided them with insight into the world of work and the print media industry. The highlight of the day was a behind the scenes look at Huisgenoot’s new reality series, Saktyd and of course the free goodie bags which were sponsored by Seventeen.
According to Cell C this year’s theme “Choose your tomorrow, today” encourages the young women and girls around
The girls were selected from schools which form part of the Media24 Rachel’s Angels Trust, a mentorship programme between 20 Western Cape schools and the University of Stellenbosch, and Enke, a youth led network of young South Africans which empowers youth to become future entrepreneurs and competitors in the workplace.
Anthea Jacobs, Project Coordinator for the Media24 Rachel’s Angels Trust believes “It is initiatives like this that exposes our learners in Rachel's Angels to the various career opportunities out there, which broadens their horizons and enable them to make informed choices about their career and future. We thank Media24 and Cell C for this opportunity.”
“This initiative has exposed learners at Stellenzicht High to the world of work and expanded their horizons, 90% of the learners reside within the surrounding farms in the Stellenbosch area” said Mr. Allies, principal of Stellenzicht High.
The Take a Girl Child to Work Day initiative counts as part of Media24’s Corporate Social Investment contribution with the current focus on media training and development.
“Each of the girls were selected because they share a passion or interest in media, what we (Media24) want to do is create a platform for them to engage with speakers on the day and gain insight into what happens behind the scenes” says Adrie Jurgensen Group co-ordinator of CSI Projects at Media24.
The girls received an exclusive sneak preview into a few episodes of Huisgenoot’s new local media based reality tv show “Saktyd,” set in Cape Town, the reality show follows contestants as they battle it out on set to win an exclusive internship opportunity at Media24’s popular Huisgenoot , South Africa’s most loved weekly afrikaans publication. The 13 episode pilot series promises to keep viewers glued to their screens, the show is set to premiere later this year on DStv’s Kyk NET channel.
The Soms Luminis High School girls were taken on a tour of the Media Park building and shown some Media24 videos and received an introduction to the EE Forum by Laverne Foncesca-Martin and Media24 Academy’s Bursary and Internship programme by Makhosi Chiwashira, Training co-ordinator.
